Как настроить звуковую карту Realtrek AC97?
Вроде-бы как нужно установить ALSA.
А как его установить, и что это вообще такое?

alsa только под линукс, насколько я знаю.
укажите путь к исходникам ядра линукса (не думаю, что это сработает во фре). Попробуйте поставить из портов или поищите бинарные пакеты.

Нет в Freebsd ALSA.
Драйвер в системе есть. Не помню, как называется. Нужно прописать его в /boot/loader.conf

надо в конфиге ядра посмотреть.

а как же бинарная совместимость с линукс?

ALSA -- драйвер встроенный в ядро. Ни о какой совместимости не может быть и речи.

какбэ намекает что нада кодеки

Подтверждено, что эти кодеки работают.

А кодеки эти где взять ?

Нигде. Это аппаратные кодеки, распаяны на материнской плате.
